Weekend Shakers: Saurabh Kanwar

A happy Friday to all. This weekend if the heat has grounded you at your homes and you are still figuring what to do, we have some really interesting recommendations coming from Saurabh Kanwar who is president at Flarepath, digital division of Nexsales. He has also founded the online art community, Visual Disobedience.

Book- Sleights of Mind: What the neuroscience of magic reveals about our brains

Rather than just deconstruct sleight of hand and card tricks and the like, the book provides us with surprising and entertaining insights into how the brain works, and more important, fails. Entertaining and very useful. The authors, Stephen Macknik and Susana Martinez-Conde, are both Ph.Ds in the neurosciences who also happen to be married to each other, which also adds a great personal flavour to the writing

Film- Bernie

A period black comedy starring Jack Black as a funeral director. The storytelling, based on a true story, is brilliant; the performances (even the tiniest cameos) are incredible. Jack Black is back to vintage comedic levels.

TV Series- The Newsroom

Another talk-heavy Aaron Sorkin drama series, this time based in the editorial offices of a news channel. Fantastic writing, great acting, and each episode is based on real news so the perspectives are useful, and the moral dilemmas potent.

Website- boingboing

One of the internet’s top blogs. They post dozens of stories daily covering a mind-zapping range of topics that include art, technology, futurism, science fiction, internet censorship, gadgets, graphic novels, current affairs, intellectual property, cat videos, Disney, left-wing politics and much much more. If there’s just one thing you read, this should be it.

Café/Restaurant- Chez Moi: Bandra and Oshiwara

Reliably good food, quaint and unpretentious atmosphere, interesting host and fun gigs.

Fun activity for the weekend-  Figure an invite from someone in the Navy and get inside the Dockyard (at Lion Gate). It’s surprisingly easy and non-bureaucratic. Get aboard any submarines and destroyers that are hanging around for a quick tour, gawk at the classic buildings down main street.  And if the INS Viraat is in dock, you have to spend a few hours on the aircraft carrier and atop the flight deck. (if you’re nice, they sometimes offer you beer in the officers’ mess!)

Music-  Planet Radio City has an online stream that plays all the ‘indipop‘ songs that played on the music channels through the 90s. Take a break from the hipstercool sounds on your iDevice, and grok this guilty pleasure.

A mobile application- Blendoku

A unique colour-mixing game with over 900 levels. Like snapshots of Pantone shade books, and violently addictive for everyone from 7-year-olds to cynical design directors. Android and IOS. Free. (You need to pay for extra hints)
