Behind the scenes: Flipbooks by Bombay Duck Designs

By Preksha Sharma

Flipbook is probably one of the earliest forms of motion animation which have managed to keep up with time. It’s fun, takes seconds, fits in your pocket and doesn’t need to be charged with power. But behind the tiny books of animation is a long and arduous journey that the creator goes through. “While the animation itself takes anywhere between 10 days to a month, the design and production takes much longer. Then of course the rigours of making a dummy, getting the registration, sequence and crops right and the final production/packaging etc. It is tedious and time consuming, but a joy to see it in the end,” says Sameer Kulavoor, founder of Bombay Duck Designs. The studio has recently launched first two flipbooks of OhFlip, a series of hand-drawn animated action loops commonly seen in Indian street food.

The first of the series, Filter Kaapi, a title that literally manifests the peculiar action of pouring filter Kaapi back and forth between two containers in meter long arc-like motions is commonly seen in Indian coffee stalls. “We are huge fans of filter coffee and the process of making it, and felt that a flipbook is a good medium to present it in an interesting way,” says Kulavoor

Titled, Ice Gola, the second one is based on the street side summer cooler that most Indians can identify with. The animation showing the brightly coloured syrups on the cloud of grated ball of ice is a very interesting take on the Indian street food and actions.

The studio had already taken a stab in creating flip books for an NGO, Project Crayons. The studio wanted to create something that can create maximum impact in minimum time and as Kulavoor rightly adds, “A flipbook takes a second to flip through and we knew if we can manage to inspire the viewer and bring a smile, he/she would definitely want to know more about Project Crayons and their work to empower marginalized communities through HER: Health, Education and Rights.”

Kulavoor’s fascination for flipbooks goes back more than a decade when Thums up released a flipbook which featured Gavaskar and Vivian Richards hitting a ball.“I still remember that feeling of being wowed when I saw it for the first time,” and to his personal excitement, he adds an observation, “I think it was one of the best uses of a flipbook for a brand.”
