Great City…Terrible Place. Check out the Z-Axis Conference in Goa

By Janhavi Sharma

The Z-Axis Conference organized by Charles Correa Foundation will be held from 20th to 22nd March at Kala Academy in Goa. The annual conference aims to further a dialogue around issues of architecture and urbanization in the Indian context. 15 speakers including some of the prominent figures in architecture and urban design will get together over three days to deliberate on the theme ‘Great City…Terrible Place’.

Charles Correa refers to the quality of the city that people often relate to as SYNERGY. He writes, “It is: SYNERGY! – A multiplier that can transform a human settlement into much more than the sum of its parts…To understand this is to realise a city is not just a physical plant, but is also a vehicle for those priceless qualities we call: CITY. And looking around the globe, one realizes the two disparate entities don’t always coexist in the same urban centre – and that more often than not, people have to choose . . . and that’s when they almost always opt for a great City – even though it might simultaneously be a terrible place.”

From India, architects Christopher Benninger, Rahul Mehrotra, Brinda Somaya and photographer Ryan Lobo among others will present at the conference. It will conclude with a ‘Climactic Session’ – a conversation between prominent Indian architects, Charles Correa, B.V Doshi, Mahendra Raj and Raj Rewal. It is open for students and professionals from all design backgrounds to attend.
