French cinephiles unite with free films at the Matterden

If you haven’t paid a visit to Matterden CFC, aka Deepak Cinema at Lower Parel, here’s more incentive. Matterden announces the opening of French Film Nights in association with Institut Français in India. The opening film will be Maestro directed by Léa Fazer, screening today at 7:00 pm.


Matterden CFC, along with Institut Francais in India, has put together a series of contemporary and classic French films for the residents of Mumbai. Cinephiles can enjoy everything from New Wave to contemporary cinema, a bit of Truffaut and Abbas Kiarostami in the quaint environs of the Deepak.

Starting May 2015, all movies that are part of this line-up will be screened for free every Tuesday evening.

Opening Film – Maestro (2014)
Thursday, 7th May 2015 – 7 PM
Directed by: Léa Fazer
Cast: Pio Marmaï, Michael Lonsdale, Déborah François

In this comedy, Henry, a young actor, finds himself involved in a film by cinema superstar, Cédric Rovere. Charmed by his benevolence, feelings hitherto unknown are aroused, while Rovere, intrigued by Henry’s dream, lives this shoot as an unexpected gift.


Le Havre (2011)
Tuesday, 12th May 2015 – 7 PM
Directed by: Aki Kaurismäki
Cast: André Wilms, Blondin Miguel, Jean-Pierre Darroussin

Le Havre is a 2011 comedy-drama film that tells the story of an aging shoeshiner who tries to save an African boy arrives by cargo ship in the French port city Le Havre. The film premiered in competition at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where it received the FIPRESCI Prize.

Cast: Martin LaSalle, Marika Green, Jean Pélégri

Pickpocket is a 1959 crime drama that revolves around Michel, who is released from jail after serving a sentence for thievery. His mother dies and he resorts to pickpocketing as a means of survival.
